The regular mass wedding programme introduced by the Kano State government has seen thousands of prospective couples trooping to the board and its offices in the local government areas for registration.
No fewer than 4,395 prospective couples have so far been registered to participate in a mass wedding by the Kano State Government.
According to The Punch, the state government had directed the Hisba Board to register all interested prospective couples in the state.
The Director-General of the board, Dr. Abba Sufi, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Saturday.
He said 3,117 of the couples were registered by Hisba offices in 41 local government areas of the state, while the remaining 1,278 couples were registered at the state headquarters of the board in Kano.
He said, “4,395 prospective couples indicated interest to participate in the programme.”
Sufi added that as soon as the remaining three local government areas submitted their list, the board would write a comprehensive report to the government for necessary action.
“The government is committed to the programme hence its decision to continue with the programme,” he said.
The mass weddings were reportedly initiated by state governments and private organisations largely for widows, orphans and divorcees in the areas.
